Extended Biography for Steven Salerno
After graduating from Parsons School of Design in New York City in 1979, where he studied under top industry professionals such as famed author/artist Maurice Sendak, Steven quickly established himself within the illustration field by creating numerous illustrations for The New York Times Op/Ed Page, New York magazine, and other prominent publications over the next few years.
Steven Salerno's whimsical, sophisticated illustrations have high crossover appeal, appearing in varied communication outlets both nationally and internationally—magazines, book covers, corporate publications, newspapers, posters, product packaging, advertising print ad campaigns, retail & restaurant graphics, as well as children's picturebooks.
2004 marks Steven's 25th year creating images for the world of graphic communications. His excellence in illustration has been recognized by Communication Arts, Print, Society of Publication Designers, Societty for News Design, and by the Society of Illustrators.
In 2000 his first illustrated children's picturebook was released. By 2006 Steven's twelfth picture book will be available in bookstores. He has illustrated the stories of famed authors Margaret Wise Brown and Bill Martin Jr., and has authored two of the picturebooks himself (Little Tumbo and Coco the Carrot). Steven's picturebooks have recieved favorable critical reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, Children's Literature, and The New York Times Review of Books.
Steven has been a classroom guest speaker at Parsons School of Design (NYC) and the School of Visual Arts (NYC), and in 2002 was the keynote speaker at the Kentucky Library Association Convention in Louisville. His original artwork has been exhibited in New York City, Seattle, Louisville, and Tokyo.
His influences are derived from an eclectic mix of fine and popular graphic artists—Honore Daumier, Francesca de Goya, Windsor McKay, Ludwig Bemelmans, and others.
Steven's images are created in a variety of methods depending on the project—digital, digital hybrids, and also in traditional watercolor, gouche, and inks with pen, brush, and pencils.
Steven Salerno was raised in Vermont and has lived and worked in New York City for many years.
