Debra Frasier comes from a family that loves birthday celebrations, and her daughter, Calla, inherited this love. When Calla was little, she always wanted to stop at the bakery counter in the grocery store to study the birthday cake display book, admiring the flowers and trucks and fairies and superheroes made of icing.

Eventually Calla began drawing designs for her own cakes and bringing them to the neighborhood bakery. That’s how she ended up blowing out candles on a Blue Morpho Butterfly Rain Forest cake, a Pippi at Bat cake, and a Hollywood Limo cake (among many others).

In 1989, when Calla celebrated her first birthday, Debra wrote this sentence on a yellow pad: She’s finished her first circle around the Sun, and now she is one. Mix that scribble with Calla’s now eighteen years of birthday cakes; stir in Debra’s love of stars, oceans, rivers, trees, canoes, and books—and you have the recipe for A Birthday Cake Is No Ordinary Cake.
