Extended Biography - Terry Widener

Terry Widener was born and raised outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1950. Growing up in a small town during the 50’s allowed Terry and his friends to roam freely about the town and much of this atmosphere and his childhood experiences are evident in Terry’s paintings.

Terry’s art training began in elementary school and continued through high school and college. Terry also has a lifelong interest in many sports as a participant and viewer. He combined these two interests to attend the University of Tulsa on an athletic scholarship and received a BFA majoring in graphic design.

Terry worked as a graphic designer in Tulsa until he and his wife, Leslie, an art director and stylist moved to Dallas, Texas in 1980. In 1981 Terry started his own studio concentrating primarily on illustration. Terry and Leslie moved their family and his studio to McKinney, Texas in 1991. In 1995 he illustrated his first children’s picture book, “Lou Gehrig: The Luckiest Man” written by David A. Adler. Since then Terry has illustrated over 20 books for children.

Clients from the United States, Europe, and Japan have worked with Terry. His illustrations have appeared in numerous publications including Sports Illustrated, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. He has also done work for major corporations such as Coca-Cola, and Time, Inc. along with some of the premier advertising agencies in the world.

Terry’s work has won numerous awards for design and illustration and is in the permanent collection of Harvard, The Ad Center of Chiba, Japan, Aesculap Corporation of Germany, Burger King and private collectors across the country.

Terry continues to illustrate picture books and is now doing sports paintings available as limited edition giclee prints. To see samples of Terry’s work or contact him please go to www.new-work.com.
