Denise Fleming is the creator of many picture books, including In the Small, Small Pond, which was a Caldecott Honor Book and an ALA Notable Children's Book.
Her earliest memory of beetles is a bit painful: When she was four years old, she was helping her mother pick Japanese beetles off peonies and accidentally plucked a bee instead. Ouch!
Denise's favorite beetles are lightning bugs—a sure sign of summer in Ohio, where she lives. To her, they are magic: flashing on and off, tiny lanterns in the night.
